Filming a wedding at Layer Marney Tower

Layer Marney Tower is the tallest Tudor gatehouse in the country, and it photographs like nowhere else in Essex - soaring brickwork, formal gardens and long views across the Blackwater countryside.

It's a venue with one unforgettable feature, and the film should use it the way the day does: as a landmark you return to, not a crutch you lean on.

Honest note: I haven't filmed a wedding at Layer Marney Tower yet - this guide is written for couples planning one there. Before any new venue I scout in person or arrive early on the day, walking the ceremony and reception spaces and planning shots around the light, so nothing is left to chance.

How I'd film your day here

  • The tower demands one perfect wide - usually at dusk - and earns close, textural detail shots of the brickwork elsewhere.
  • The formal gardens frame processions and confetti beautifully.
  • Long rural views give scale to establishing and drone shots, permission and conditions allowing.
Subject to the venue's permission and safe conditions, yes - the gatehouse from the air is extraordinary. I always confirm restrictions first.
Not yet - this guide is written for couples planning a wedding there. New venues get scouted before the day, so every key shot is planned, not hoped for.
