Filming a wedding at Hatfield House

Hatfield House is one of England's great Jacobean houses - childhood home of Elizabeth I, 250 acres of parkland, and a venue whose Old Palace and Riding School host some of the most elegant weddings in the Home Counties.

Film crews have used Hatfield for decades, and it's easy to see why: the light through the Old Palace windows and the long approach through the park are cinematic before you touch a camera.

Honest note: I haven't filmed a wedding at Hatfield House yet - this guide is written for couples planning one there. Before any new venue I scout in person or arrive early on the day, walking the ceremony and reception spaces and planning shots around the light, so nothing is left to chance.

How I'd film your day here

  • The Old Palace's oak beams and banners give ceremonies a warmth most stately homes can't match - I film it close and candlelit.
  • The knot gardens and fountain courtyard hold beautiful soft light for couple portraits between courses.
  • A slow gimbal walk up the parkland approach makes a stunning opening title shot.
The park and house photograph beautifully from the air. Drone use requires estate permission, which I arrange ahead of the day.
Not yet - consider this a planning guide. Before any new venue I visit or arrive early on the day to scout ceremony sightlines, light and sound, so the coverage is planned rather than improvised.
