Filming a wedding at Ashridge House

Ashridge House is the grandest wedding venue in Hertfordshire - a former royal residence in the Chiltern Hills, with 190 acres of gardens and one of the most theatrical Gothic Revival facades in England.

A house this imposing needs restraint on film. I let the architecture frame a few key moments - the arrival, the staircase, dusk on the terrace - and keep the heart of the film with the people in it.

Honest note: I haven't filmed a wedding at Ashridge House yet - this guide is written for couples planning one there. Before any new venue I scout in person or arrive early on the day, walking the ceremony and reception spaces and planning shots around the light, so nothing is left to chance.

How I'd film your day here

  • The chapel and grand staircase give a ceremony sequence real scale - I shoot wide and still, letting the room do the work.
  • The Italian gardens and lime avenue are made for golden-hour portraits with a long lens.
  • Candlelit interiors in winter here are extraordinary - warm tungsten against stone, graded gently so it feels like memory.
The estate and Chiltern backdrop are stunning from the air. Flights depend on venue permission and airspace conditions, which I always confirm in advance.
Not yet - consider this a planning guide. Before any new venue I visit or arrive early on the day to scout ceremony sightlines, light and sound, so the coverage is planned rather than improvised.
