Filming a wedding at Butley Priory

Butley Priory is a 14th-century monastic gatehouse standing alone near the Suffolk coast - gothic stonework, soaring ceilings and an atmosphere closer to a fairytale than a function venue.

Small, extraordinary venues like this make intimate films with enormous presence: every frame has that architecture in it.

Honest note: I haven't filmed a wedding at Butley Priory yet - this guide is written for couples planning one there. Before any new venue I scout in person or arrive early on the day, walking the ceremony and reception spaces and planning shots around the light, so nothing is left to chance.

How I'd film your day here

  • The gothic hall gives ceremony coverage a scale far beyond the guest count.
  • Carved stonework earns real detail-shot screen time.
  • Coastal Suffolk light and gardens soften the drama for portraits.
They're some of my favourites - smaller days often make richer films.
Not yet - this guide is for couples planning a wedding there.
