Choosing a wedding videographer isn't just about finding someone whose films you love - though that matters enormously. It's also about making sure they're the right fit for your day, your venue, and the way you want to be filmed. The best way to find that out is to ask the right questions before you book.
Here are the seven I'd suggest asking any videographer you're considering - including me.
1. Can I see a full film, not just a highlights reel?
Highlights reels are designed to show off the very best three minutes. They're useful, but a full film tells you far more - how someone handles a complete ceremony, how they capture speeches, whether the pacing holds up. Any videographer worth booking will happily show you a complete piece, not just the showreel.
2. How would you describe your filming style?
Styles vary hugely. Some videographers are highly directed and cinematic, posing couples and staging moments. Others - like me - work in a natural, documentary way, capturing the day as it genuinely unfolds. Neither is wrong, but they produce very different films. Make sure their style matches the day you actually want.
3. Will it be you filming on the day?
With some larger companies, the person you speak to isn't the person who turns up. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it's worth knowing. When you book me, you get me - the same person you've been talking to throughout.
4. What exactly is included, and what does delivery look like?
Get clear on the details:
- How many hours of coverage on the day?
- What films do you actually receive - a highlights film, full speeches, ceremony?
- How long until you get them?
- How are they delivered, and how long do you have access?
Clarity here avoids any surprises later. For reference, you can see exactly what's included in my packages.
5. How do you work alongside the photographer?
Your videographer and photographer will be sharing the same spaces all day. You want someone who collaborates rather than competes - sharing angles, staying out of shots, and keeping the day relaxed. Ask how they typically handle it.
6. Have you filmed at my venue before?
It's a bonus if they have - they'll know the light, the layout, and the best spots. But it's not essential. A good videographer will happily visit or research a new venue beforehand. I've filmed across Essex, London, Surrey, Norfolk and beyond, and I always prepare thoroughly for venues I'm visiting for the first time.
7. What happens if something goes wrong?
It's not the most romantic question, but it matters. Ask about backup equipment, insurance, and what happens in the unlikely event they can't make it. Professionals carry backup cameras and audio, have contingency plans, and are properly insured. The answer tells you how seriously they take their responsibility to you.
A final thought
Beyond all the practical questions, trust your instinct about the person. You'll be spending one of the most important days of your life with this person quietly in the background. You want someone who puts you at ease, listens to what matters to you, and feels like a calm, reassuring presence.
If you'd like to ask me any of these, I'd genuinely welcome it - get in touch and we can have a proper conversation about your day.
